Mood boards for design projects

If you are taking up interior design projects for your home, chances are that you might get overwhelmed even before you start the project. With such a wide range of materials, colors, brands and objects to choose from, it may seem like a never ending process to decide what is it that you exactly want from these options.

At Dwellistic, we create mood boards at very early stages in the design process. This helps us streamline our ideas and better communicate these ideas with our clients and it gives clients an idea of the overall look and feel of the final product. It also allows both the parties to agree on a direction. We like to think of mood boards as a visual language. Creating mood boards can be a great start for anyone who is taking up a DIY interior design project. Here are some tips on how you can make mood boards.

1.  Decide on what stays and filter out the rest

If you are someone who has taken up a DIY project, you mostly have certain ideas for your decor, a theme or some point of reference to start. Try to focus on this start point. It is very easy to get distracted and overwhelmed when you see your Pinterest boards and tons of options in front of you. Collect reference images of places you like, textures that you want in your decor, colors or anything else that aligns with how you visualize your space to look in the end and put it in a collage format. The collage can be just an abstract presentation of your ideas. This can be your first step to get clarity and stay on track with decision making that follows.

2.   Create as many mood boards as you want

We define details on our mood boards. These details could be color palettes, choice of materials or even furniture vendors. If you find one mood board limiting, create one more. Once you know how you want your space to look and feel, it will be easier to make other choices like selecting furniture and decor. When you are looking to purchase online or in stores, focus only on those products that match the details on your mood boards. If you are unable to make these decisions or find it hard to find the right brands, consult a design specialist who can guide you to make these decisions.

 3.   Organize your ideas

Get creative with this process. These mood boards are meant to make your design process easy. Think of it as a creative way to organize. Try incorporating all elements on it that you find important to your project like prices of decor objects, phone numbers of manufacturers or delivery dates and organize them in a way that it is easy to refer to these details when you are actually in the process of executing your design ideas.

4.   See your ideas come to life

Start designing details and creating spatial experiences that are personal and unique to you. One by one, all that you’ve put on your mood boards will start coming together like a painting being created on a blank canvas.
