Closet solutions for compact spaces
In this blog we are going to share solutions that can help you create systems to create well organized closets for compact apartments. Lets learn some different types of closet systems before we start organizing. Knowing this will give you a framework on where and how to start.
1. Built-in storage/closet
This is the most common type of storage that is available in most of the urban apartments. This type of storage space typically either has sliding doors, folding door, pull-open closet doors or in some cases, no doors at all. These kind of storage closets can be multi purpose and versatile. Though it may seem challenging, it is one of the best kinds to create systems and organize. We will talk more on how to organize in such closets later in our ‘Organize smartly’ section.
2. Freestanding wardrobes
Some apartments do not have a built-in storage space. In such cases, a self-standing closet is your best friend. There are many options available for self-standing closets in the market at different price points. Some of these closets come with built in features like drawers, hooks, features to hang, making your job to organize much easier. Some are modular and allow you to customize features that you want by mixing and matching. This works well for creating that extra space for any additional items you may want to store too.

Why freestanding closets systems work well for small spaces:
Space saver
Most freestanding closets can store almost everything without taking up much room. This is a great solution for rental apartments that have restrictions to install furniture on the walls. It is also a great way to store without buying bulky big pieces.
Easy to move
Another advantage of freestanding closets is that they are lightweight and very easy to move. This means that you can use it in your next rental apartment without having to worry about installation. You can also repurpose it and use it as coat rack or a display décor piece if you no longer want to use it as a wardrobe.
Style + function
Free standing closets can be both aesthetically good looking and functional. They come in a variety of materials like metal and wood. So whatever the décor style of your room maybe, they will blend it or sometimes even stand out as that one stylish décor item in that room. Read our styling tips below for details.
Organize smartly
Start your organizing project the KonMari way, keep things that ‘spark joy’ and let go of the things that no longer serve that purpose. This will not only help you organize and be clutter free but will make your next move a lot easier. The following tips are meant to give you a framework to start separating your things into categories and create systems to keep them organized for a long time.
Create systems- Create your own custom categories for all your things. For example, start separating your everyday clothes, seasonal wear, sports garments, undergarment etc. List all the smaller items you want to store like ties and scarves. Ladies, if that one earring hanging in your jewelry box is a mystery, you may even want to use this method to separate your jewelry/accessories to better organize. Next, know what goes where in order to find it easily and to store it back in place.
1. Racks, hanging methods and shelf dividers
All the above three would come in handy to separate your clothing. Avoid creasing by hanging your work outfits or outfits more prone to creasing suing hangers. Fold the soft clothes that are less prone to creasing or your home wear/nightwear and stack them neatly on the racks or drawers. We highly recommend using shelf dividers to avoid mixing of clothes and to help you put them back in place.
2. Baskets, cubbies, storage under the hangers
Make space in the closet to keep laundry baskets. There are great basket options to do this while still making your closet look neat and nice. Use cubbies to keep quilts, sheets, throws or scarves neatly folded and tucked. Create space under your hangers to store your shoes properly. If you have a space to store shoes in your home, use this space to store your extra travel baggage.
3. Hooks and command strips
The real problem items are the smaller items. If you have a full-length mirror, make storage for these smaller things near it. Make hooks and command strips your best friend for they will help you organize these smaller accessories easily.
