Entryway Project
In our previous blog we covered tips to design small entryways. In this blog we are going to share some insights, product links and resources from one of our recent projects where we designed a small entryway.
This entryway is of a typical NYC rental apartment, narrow and fairly small. This narrow entryway needed to have a space to store shoes, a place to keep small everyday items like keys, mail and small packages, a seat to wear shoes and some extra light. The idea here was to create an entryway space that could have all these functions. We are going to show step by step how we created this entryway. You will also find links to all the products we have used in this project.
Step 1:
We made a list of all the functions for which this entry way is to be utilized. As mentioned above, for this particular entryway the idea was to create extra storage for shoes, a place for smaller everyday objects and a welcoming entrance to the apartment.
Step 2:
After identifying functions for the space, the next step was to select furniture. We picked a slim and high console table for this area. A high console table meant having storage for shoes underneath while utilizing the table top for smaller objects and decor. Other furniture pieces used are a light weight side stool and an open shoe rack. Since the space was narrow, an open shoe rack made the space feel more airy over a closed, bulky shoe cabinet.
Step 3:
Upon selecting the bigger furniture pieces, our next stop was table top objects and decor. We have used a round wall mounted mirror over the console table. Mirrors are great for narrow, small or darker spaces as they bounce light off them making the space look bigger and brighter than what it is. One main function of this entryway was to store and organize extra shoes without having to add an additional shoe cabinet. For this purpose, we created a combination of an open shoe rack for everyday shoes and used wicker baskets to store shoes that are worn occasionally. We used a beautiful brass tray to hold keys, candles, wallets and other small objects. We also wanted to have a designated mail organizer at the entrance. So we used a brass mail holder to match the brass tray.
Step 4:
Next, we added decor to complete the look and make the space feel warm and welcoming. You can add flowers, table top plants, pots, vases, framed art, hooks to hang coats or anything else that brings out your style. We used a large white vase with Eucalyptus stems to add color and a stack of books with a smaller vase on top to add more height, visual color balance and character. Lastly, we added a terracotta color runner rug to add texture and complete this look.
Voila! A welcoming entryway in just 4 easy steps!
